How to get an FNMT digital certificate

1. Prepare your computer

Install the FNMT-RCM configuration tool for your operating system. Apply for and download the certificate on the same computer and under the same user account. Do not reformat the computer between those steps.

2. Request your code

Open the official certificate application, enter your details exactly as shown on your identity document and accept the terms. You will create a password that you need again when downloading the certificate. Store it in a password manager because it cannot be recovered.

The FNMT will also email you an application code. Keep it: you need it to prove your identity and download the certificate.

3. Prove your identity

Check the documents and identity-verification offices accepted by the FNMT. You must attend in person with your application code and the valid original identity document required for your nationality.

• Check whether the office requires an appointment before you travel.
• The FNMT states that this certificate cannot be verified at Correos post offices.
• If somebody attends on your behalf, your signature must first be notarised.

4. Download and back up the certificate

After proving your identity, return to the same computer and user account and open the official certificate download. Enter your details exactly as you did in the application to complete the installation.

Next, export a backup protected by a strong password and store it somewhere safe. The certificate is personal and non-transferable: read the FNMT's certificate-storage recommendations and never hand it to a third party.

If something goes wrong

• If you changed computer or user account, or reformatted the machine before downloading, start a new application.
• If your name, surname or identity number does not exactly match the application, correct the procedure before continuing.
• Ask for help only through the official FNMT website. Avoid websites that copy its logos or charge for obtaining an individual certificate.
